Annotating transcripts

Choosing notation and transcription conventions to support different kinds of analysis.

Interview Sample C1: Color-coding interview topics and themes
An interview transcript that the researcher has first color coded with highlighter tool to mark different topics and themes. The researcher then combined segments marked in the same color to create a new document in which the interviewee’s comments are organized by theme instead of by the original sequence of the interview.

Interview Sample C2: Adding an annotation column to transcripts
An interview with a well-spoken female high school student, about a topic she appears to find interesting. The researcher has created a separate column for annotating the transcript to identify themes, issues, questions, and contextual cues. Compare with interview a, the transcript of an interview with a high school boy who is less comfortable being interviewed and less interested in the topics being examined.
